The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is the largest Austrian institution of mathematical research and tertiary education in the mathematical sciences. It consists of active research groups in a wide range of fields, starting from logical foundations, bridging all classical core subjects, and up to concrete applications in industry. As part of the Faculty, the Institute of Mathematics represents the entire discipline of mathematics in research and teaching, without making an arbitrary separation into pure and applied fields.

Your professional field of activity:

As a University Assistant (Praedoc), you will complement the research team around Univ.-Prof. Adrian Constantin, PhD. Our ideal candidate has a strong interest in Mathematical Analysis with special backround in Partial Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, can easily integrate into our team, independently contribute to current research, and work with responsibility for results.

The start of the contract is the 1st of march 2026 or later, the exact starting date is negotiable. The employment period is 4 years from the beginning of the contract.

Our research focuses on the field of Mathematical Analysis. As a team, a positive, inclusive, and respectful working environment is important to us, and we regularly exchange ideas on current topics and projects in our group meetings.

Your future tasks:

Active Participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

• Collaboration and research in the field of partial differential equations with emphasis on geophysical aspects (oceanography, atmospheric flow):
  o Development of own solutions as part of the research group of Prof. Constantin.
  o Conclusion of a dissertation agreement within 12 - 18 month is expected.
  o Membership in the Vienna School of Mathematics and active participation in its activities will be required.
• Interdisciplinary colalboration:
  o You participate in international scientific collaborations, as well as international conerences and workshops.
• Collaboration in teaching and administration:
  o You participate in the administration of the institute, teaching and research.
  o You hold courses and examinations in accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement and you (co-)supervise students.

Required Qualifications/Position Requirement:

• Master studies in mathematics, or a related field completed and certificate provided in due time before the start of the contract
• Emphasis in one or more of the following areas: Mathematical Physics and Partial Differential Equations
• Research competence & initiative demonstrated through international publications in peer relevant media
• Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
• You are a team player with high social and communicative competence and have international experience.
• You are goal-oriented and have a high motivation to strive for scientific excellence.
• You are not entitled to compensation for travel and accommodation expenses incurred in connection with the admission process.

Employment: The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a nonextension declaration.

Fixed-term contract and adequate salary: The basic salary corresponds to the collective agreement for employees of the universities according to § 48 VwGr. B1 basic level (praedoc): EUR 3,714.80 on a full-time basis (14 times per year). The actual salary is finally determined depending on professional experience and qualification. The gross salary covers all benefits of the employee in quantitative and qualitative terms (= all-in payment).
