Faculty of Medicine - Who We Are
Sigmund Freud Private University (SFU) in Vienna established its dynamic and forward-looking Faculty of Medicine in 2015. We offer Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Medicine, admitting approximately 280 students per year through a competitive entrance examination that selects motivated and dedicated future researchers and medical specialists.
The mission of medical research at SFU is to foster innovation in healthy aging and preventive medicine across all fields of human medicine. We actively support investigator-initiated clinical studies and translational research within SFU and its partner hospitals, as well as collaborative projects with external senior scientists, always with the goal of translating research outcomes directly into patient care.
Our laboratories are equipped with a broad range of state-of-the-art instruments supporting molecular and cellular biology research. This includes, among others, a next-generation sequencing system, a flow cytometer, equipment for ELISA-based assays and microplate analysis, an ultracentrifuge, a fluorescence microscope, as well as electrophoresis and gel documentation systems.
What We Offer
We are seeking a Full Professor of Molecular Medicine with proven experience in leading a research laboratory (minimum of 5 years). This position is based in Vienna — whether you are already based here or ready to relocate, we look forward to your application!

As part of the senior academic staff, you will play an active role in shaping the research strategy of the faculty.
Your Responsibilities
Your primary responsibility will be to lead the Molecular Medicine Working Group within the SFU MED Research Centre. Our laboratories are dedicated to translational research, employing advanced cell culture and molecular/genomic techniques to deepen the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the development of the faculty’s research strategy and building a strong interdisciplinary team.
- Establishing translational research projects within SFU MED and in collaboration with national and international partners.
- Developing biochemical and biomolecular assays to characterize mechanisms of inflammation and disease progression.
- Acquiring third-party funding and developing sustainable financial plans for expanding research programs.
- Building and maintaining biobanks and databases of biomaterials and associated metadata for future analyses.
- Publishing in peer-reviewed journals and representing SFU in international research communities.
- Developing and supporting interactive, interdisciplinary PhD programs.
Your Profile
- PhD in Biochemistry, Pathophysiology/Histology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in leading an interdisciplinary molecular biology research team.
- Experience in supervising PhD students and other trainees.
- Strong expertise in modern molecular biology and biochemical techniques, with excellent data management skills.
- Experience integrating translational research into clinical studies.
- Proven record of successful grant applications.
- Excellent organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Proactive, solution-oriented mindset with a collaborative approach.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken; German proficiency is an advantage.

We offer a minimum gross monthly salary of EUR 6,000 (14 payments per year on a full-time basis) and are open to competitive overpayment depending on qualifications and experience.
