The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is the largest Austrian institution of mathematical research and tertiary education in the mathematical sciences. It consists of active research groups in a wide range of fields, starting from logical foundations, bridging all classical core subjects, and up to concrete applications in industry. As part of the Faculty, the Institute of Mathematics represents the entire discipline of mathematics in research and teaching, without making an arbitrary separation into pure and applied fields.

Your professional field of activity:
The position is part of the “Mathematics and Biosciences" research group, which is led by Prof. Joachim Hermisson. We are looking for an independent scientist interested in mathematical modeling in the areas of evolution, evolutionary ecology, quantitative genetics, and/or epidemiology. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of how to address relevant biological problems using analytical methods from the fields of differential equations and/or stochastic processes, as well as computational approaches and/or statistical methods of data analysis. Your future tasks:
Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

Collaboration and research in the field of Mathematics and Biosciences:
o Conduct your own, independent research, with an opportunity to apply for independent third-party funding.
o Collaborate in the research projects of the "Mathematics and Biosciences" group led by Prof. Hermisson.
o Become an active member of the Biomathematics group of the Mathematics Faculty: https://biomathematik.ac.at.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration:
o Make use of the excellent scientific landscape in Vienna, especially in evolutionary research: https://www.evolvienna.at/.
o Participate in international scientific collaborations, as well as international conferences and workshops.
- Collaboration in teaching and administration:
o Contribute to teaching in accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement and participate in the administration of the institute.
o (Co)supervise Bachelor and Master students.
Required Qualifications/Position Requirement:
- Doctorate in mathematics, natural sciences or a related field completed and certificate provided in due time before the start of the contract.
- Emphasis in one or more of the following areas: required: biomathematics, modeling; desired: population genetics, quantitative genetics, evolutionary ecology, epidemiology.
- Research competence & initiative demonstrated through publications in first-class journals.
- Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
- You are a team player with high social and communicative competence and have international experience.
- You are goal-oriented and have a high motivation to strive for scientific excellence.
- Further desirable qualifications: Prior experience as postdoc, teaching experience, proven ability to attract third-party funding.
