The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is the largest Austrian institution of mathematical research and tertiary education in the mathematical sciences. lt consists of active research groups in a wide range of fields, starting from logical foundations, bridging all classical core subjects, and up to concrete applications in industry. As part of the Faculty, the Institute of Mathematics represents the entire discipline of mathematics in research and teaching, without making an arbitrary separation into pure and applied fields.

Your professional field of activity:
We are looking for a University Assistant Praedoc to join the dynamic research team led by Ass.-Prof. Dr. Matija Bucic. Our ideal candidate will bring a pronounced interest in developing and applying of ldeas in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics and finding applications and connections with other areas. You should have a robust and well-founded background in combinatorics, especially with a strong preference for experience in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics. We are looking for a colleague who integrates easily in our team, is able to contribute to groundbreaking research independently, and can take charge of delivering impactful results.
The focus of our research is in the field of Discrete mathematics. The start date of the contract is flexible, beginning as early as February 1, 2026. The duration of employment is four years from the start of the contract.
Your future tasks:
Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:
- Collaboration and research in the field of Discrete Mathematics:
o Development of own solutions as part of the research group of Prof. Bucic
o Conclusion of a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months is expected.
o Membership in the Vienna School of Mathematics and active participation in its activities will be required.
o Attending and presenting your work at local seminars and international conferences. - lnterdisciplinary Collaboration:
o Willingness to participate in international and interdisciplinary research with applied researchers. - Collaboration in teaching and administration:
o Independent participation in the administration of the institute, teaching and research.
o Independent participation in and teaching of courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
Required Qualifications/Position requirement:
- Completed diploma or master's degree in mathematics or a related field before the contract starts.
- Experience in scientific writing and research methods (copy of the Master's thesis, as well as list of publications and presentations, if applicable).
- Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken.
- You are a team player with high social and communication skills.
- You are goal-oriented and have a high motivation to strive for scientific excellence.
- You are not entitled to compensation for travel and accommodation expenses incurred in connection with the application procedure.
What we offer:
- Employment: The employment duration is 4 years. lnitially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminale it within the first 12 months by submitting a nonextension declaration.
- Fixed-term contract and adequate salary: We offer an annual gross salary of at least€ 52,007.20 for a fulltime Position corresponds to the collective agreement for employees of the universities according to § 48 VwGr. B1 lit b basic level (praedoc). An overpayment based on qualification and experience is possible. The gross salary covers all benefits of the employee in quantitative and qualitative terms (= all-in payment).
