The Department at the University of Vienna is the largest academic center covering all fields relating to the German language and German-language literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology. In addition, the areas of Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Media Theory, Literary Theory, and Literature for Children and Young Adults are well established. More than 5000 students are enrolled. 

Your personal sphere of influence:

As a university assistant prae doc, you will have the opportunity to work at one of the largest departments of German Philology worldwide consisting of an inspiring group of people dedicated to a manifold range of research and academic teaching. 

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

• A dissertation project is expected, which is located in the field of literary studies with a focus on the history of knowledge and/or media history, and, if possible, is already at a later stage of completion. 
• A seminar in the area of the BA is also expected, as well as: 
• general knowledge of modern German literary history and literary theory 
• Collaboration in research, teaching and administration 
• Participation in research projects in the above-mentioned subject area 
• The successful candidate is expected to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months 
• Independent teaching of introductory and literary courses according to the collective agreement 
• Supervision of students 
• Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums 
• Administration of departmental workflows, assistance in teaching and research 
• The conclusion of a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months or the existence of the same 

Desirable qualifications are: 

• teaching experience/Experience with the planning, organizing and implementation of scientific meetings 
• knowledge of university structures 
• experience abroad 
• experience in scientific work 
• lecturing activities 
• interests in the field of literary theory/aesthetics and/or cultural sociology 

This is part of your personality:

• Above-average degree in German Philology (Magister or MA or UF German, preferably in NdL)
• Expertise and didactic competences in Modern German Literature 
• High ability to express oneself in speaking and writing 
• Excellent command of written and spoken English 
• IT user skills 
• Ability to work in a team
