The Department of Geography and Regional Research is part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. It is the largest and oldest Geography department in Austria. The department offers scientific degrees in the bachelor program, in three master programs, in the teacher education program (Bachelor and Master), and in two doctoral programs. Your personal sphere of influence:
The position is assigned to the working group Physical Geography, which has a sound reputation in the research domains of landslides, “human impact” on geosystems and spatial modeling of geomorphic processes as well as in the applied research in the thematic areas global environmental change, natural hazards and –risks, vulnerability, multi-hazard risk and early warning systems. The position is embedded at the interface of natural hazards, risk assessment, vulnerability, multi-hazards and risks, early warning systems and disaster management with a focus on work with big data and spatial planning.

Areas of work:
The employment aims to deepen and extend the professional and scientific education targeting a doctoral degree. Your areas of work include:
- Writing a dissertation / we expect from the successful candidate the dissertation agreement within 12-18 months
- Contribution to scientific studies
- Involvement in international co-operations
- Support by allocation of third-party funded projects
- Independent teaching based on the collective bargaining agreement
- Support in Bachelor’s and Master’s student supervision and examination activities
- Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance
- Integration into the research group and participation in administrative duties
Profile:
- Graduate degree in Geography (major in Physical Geography, Natural Hazards and Risk Analysis, Process Geomorphology or equivalent) or Applied Geology, Engineering Geology, Cartography and Geoinformation or Remote Sensing/ Earth Observation.
- Interest in Natural Hazards and Risk, spatial analysis and landslide modeling
- Interest in the systematic investigation of real and potential consequences of landslides on societal systems in the sense of consequence analyses
- Interest in spatio-temporal scenario analysis of natural hazards and risks in relation to climate change
- Strongest interest in remote sensing/ Earth observation applications for data acquisition, data processing, data analysis, and advanced visualization of results
- GIS qualifications are of major advances
- Skills in project management
- Very good pedagogic teaching skills
- Knowledge in e-learning is beneficial
- Excellent knowledge in English in word and writing
- Knowledge in German in word and writing
- High command of written and oral language
- Ability to work in teams
- Knowledge in programming language/s, ArcGIS for Desktop and Server, Literature database, Adobe products
- Experience with slope stability programs
