Your personal sphere of play:
Your future position is at the Department of Ancient History, Papyrology and Epigraphy. It is the largest university research and training center for the history of antiquity in Austria. In addition to Greek, Roman, and Late Antique history, the department’s academic focal points include Latin and Greek Epigraphy, Papyrology, Etruscology and Italic Antiquity studies, as well as the cultural history of antiquity. The department is characterized by a high degree of internationalization, global networking, and close exchange between researchers, instructors, and students.
We are seeking a versatile Senior Scientist (all genders) who will undertake responsibilities at the institute in long-term research projects, the editorial management of scholarly journals and publications, science management/academic administration, and teaching.
This position will initially be limited to 3 years. As part of the hiring process, an evaluation agreement will be concluded between the position holder and the faculty and the assigned institute for the duration of the limitation. Upon fulfillment of this agreement, the service contract will be made permanent.
Your future tasks:
- Editorial management of the department’s international scholarly publications — on the one hand, the journal “Tyche. Beiträge zur Alten Geschichte, Papyrologie und Epigraphik,” published both in print and Open Access (annual volumes as well as supplement and special volumes), and on the other hand, the electronic Open Access series “Wiener Beiträge zur Alten Geschichte online (WBAGon)”
- Oversee the research area “Austria Romana Austriaca” (Roman Austria), to which you will contribute through your own research and publications; you will also participate in research projects in this and adjacent fields. International lecturing is expected.
- Maintain the department’s archive of finds of ancient inscriptions in Austria (Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum; archive of the Epigraphic Database Heidelberg). This also includes preparing the “Annona Epigraphica” (annual report on inscription finds in Austria) and processing Austria’s inscription finds for the international Année épigraphique (AE), the annual report of newly discovered and published Latin inscriptions from antiquity.
- Organize lecture series and conferences
- Teach independent courses in the scope defined by the collective agreement
- Contribute to the organization of teaching
- Assist with organizational and administrative tasks
- Advise and support students
This is part of your personality:
- Completed doctoral/PhD studies in Ancient History
- Research exellence demonstrated by publications in internationally relevant venues, especially in the area of Roman Austria and its inscriptions, including related fields
- Proven high-level competence and several years of experience in editing and managing scholarly journals and publications
- Experience in organizing lecture series, conferences, and similar events
- Many years of teaching experience
- Strong team skills
- Excellent command of German and English
- Excellent command of Latin and Ancient Greek
- Good command of Italian and French

Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The base salary is EUR 5,014.30 (14 monthly payments per year for a Senior Scientist [postdoc]) for a duration of 3 years and increases if we can recognize prior professional experience.
