Your personal workspace:

The Department of Functional Materials and Catalysis at the University of Vienna's Faculty of Chemistry is seeking to fill a four-year, fixed-term Prae Doc doctoral position. The working group primarily focuses on the structure and thermodynamics of inorganic material systems. The planned research topic is the synthesis and characterization of active electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. This research will take place in an interdisciplinary and international setting. Therefore, this position requires a high degree of commitment and excellent communication skills. The research task combines materials chemistry synthesis methods, thermoanalytical measurements, and structural characterization.

You have prior knowledge of materials chemistry in relation to solid-state chemistry, experimental thermoanalysis, microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Additionally, you have a basic understanding of university processes and structures. Ideally, you have participated in scientific work and gained experience.

Your future tasks:

The successful candidate continues our research work on active electrode materials for Li-ion batteries, focusing in particular on next-generation cathode materials such as LNMO. This work involves thermodynamic and structural investigations aimed at understanding phase relationships as a function of composition and temperature.
You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

• You are involved in research work and scientific studies in the field of battery materials, at the interface of technical applications, resource management, and sustainability.
• You independently plan and carry out complex experiments, evaluate the data, and interpret the results.
• You will be involved in publications, scientific articles, and presentations.
• We expect you to help maintain our measuring equipment and take on administrative tasks.
• You work on your dissertation and its completion.
• We expect you to join the Doctoral School of Chemistry at the University of Vienna and to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
• You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.

This is part of your personality:

• Completed Master's degree or Diploma in chemistry at a university, preferably in the field of materials science, or an equivalent qualification
• Knowledge and practical experience in inorganic chemistry and thermodynamics
• Experience in thermal analysis, especially TGA-MS
• Experience in crystallography, X-ray diffraction, and Rietveld refinement
• Experience with metallography, especially SEM-EDX
• Ability to work both independently and in a team, with strong social and communication skills
• Experience in research and academic writing is an advantage
• Excellent written and spoken English skills are essential, as is German language proficiency at least at B2 level.
• IT skills: MS Office is mandatory, Origin is desirable

Duration of contract: The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
