The Institute of Classical Archaeology is part of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies.  Classical Archaeology, as it is understood and practiced at the University of Vienna, is characterized by methodological diversity and deals as one subject of cultural studies with the material legacies of the Greek and Roman world in their broadest sense. The advertised position is based in the field of Roman archaeology and offers unique opportunities for further qualification and interdisciplinary work. Academic staff and students at the Institute of Classical Archaeology value internationality, outstanding research projects and interdisciplinary collaboration. The position is limited to 6 years and is to be filled from 23.09.2024. 

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the field of Roman archaeology.
  • You build up an independent research profile in the field of Roman archaeology.
  • You prepare and complete a habilitation.
  • You participate in the research focus in Material Culture Studies and, where appropriate, in other research focuses of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies
  • You publish internationally and give lectures.
  • You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You apply for projects and raise third-party funds.
  • You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance.
  • You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed doctoral/PhD studies in Roman Archaeology or Archaeology (with focus on Roman archaeology) or Classics (with focus on Roman archaeology)
  • Outstanding dissertation
  • Proven research focus on Roman archaeology
  • Relevant research and presentation experience as well as publications
  • Knowledge in the field of material culture studies proven through international publications in peer-relevant media
  • Didactic skills / experience in e-learning
  • IT skills (MS office, possibly Illustrator, AutoCAD, QGIS or similar)
  • Knowledge of German (C1) or at least one other modern language (Italian, French or Spanish, C1)
  • Team player with high social/communication skills
