The Philosophy of Language and Analytic Philosophy Group at the University of Vienna is looking for a postdoctoral researcher. The position is based at the Philosophy Department within the Faculty of Philosophy and Education. The contract is for 3 years and renewable for another 3 years (6 years in total).
Your workplace:
Your future position is at the Philosophy of Language and Analytic Philosophy Group, led by Univ.-Prof. Max Kölbel. Currently, members of the group are working on a broad range of questions in philosophy of language, metaethics, epistemology, metaphysics, conceptual engineering and philosophical methodology. The group is embedded in the Philosophy Department, which is one of the largest philosophy departments in the German speaking world and provides an outstanding and international research environment. The group is involved in the FWF-funded PACE project (https://pace.phl.univie.ac.at/) and also in the FWF-funded Cluster of Excellence "Knowledge in Crisis” (https://philosophy.ceu.edu/knowledge-crisis), which is a cooperation between the Central European University and the Universities of Vienna, Graz, and Salzburg, exploring questions about the nature, transmission, ethics and politics of knowledge.
Your future tasks:
We expect you to participate actively in research, teaching and administration. This involves the following:
• You produce excellent research in philosophy.
• You take part in and help organising research activities such as reading groups, workshops, visiting talks.
• You publish in peer-reviewed journals and give talks and research presentations.
• You apply for third-party funding for your research.
• You prepare your future career (this may take the form of completing a habilitation)
• You contribute to teaching within the BA and MA philosophy programmes by independently teaching courses to the extent to which you are required according to the collective bargaining agreement (4 SWS).
• You supervise students in your areas of competence.
• You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance. You take on administrative and organisational tasks.
Your profile:
Required:
• PhD in philosophy (the Phd must be completed by the application deadline)
• Track-record of publication in peer-reviewed journals (commensurate with career stage)
• Research interests in a subset of the following fields: philosophy of language, epistemology, metaethics, metaphysics, conceptual engineering, philosophical methodology
• Teaching experience
• Excellent knowledge of English (C1)
• Knowledge of German or willingness to acquire proficiency within 2 years.
• Organisational skills and willingness to organise events, including reading groups, talks, workshops
• Ability to work in a team
Desirable:
• Teaching competence in philosophy of language is highly desirable.
• Willingness to contribute to the research and activities of the Cluster of Excellence "Knowledge in Crisis”.
• Note that many courses at the University of Vienna are taught in English, so knowledge of German is not strictly required. However, knowledge of German is highly desirable.
