At the Institute of Logic and Computation, in the Research Unit of Databases and Artificial Intelligence (192-02) TU Wien is offering a position as university assistant (post-doc) in natural language interfaces, large language models, and exploratory data access for 40 hours/week limited to expected 1 year with the option to extend for a maximum of 2 years. Expected start: January 2026.
Tasks:
- Design and develop a conversational interface layer that connects natural language queries to structured database requests
- Implement LLM-based query translation and schema-aware prompt design ensuring data security and access control compliance
- Develop mechanisms for response validation, grounding, and user feedback to improve transparency and trust
- Prototype and evaluate AI-assisted and interactive data exploration methods across several data domains
- Collaborate with technical and academic partners to align developments with production workflows
- Publish results and contribute to dissemination within relevant technical communities
- Participation in organizational and administrative tasks of the research division and the faculty
Your profile:
- Doctoral degree (PhD) in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field
- Strong background in natural language processing, large language models, or intelligent information systems
- Experience with prompt engineering, semantic parsing, or text-to-SQL / data access models
- Familiarity with data warehousing, SQL, OLAP, and data analytics
- Programming and scripting experience (e.g., Python, LLM frameworks, etc.)
- Interest in human-centered data exploration and visual analytics is highly desirable
- Ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team
- Excellent written and spoken English: knowledge of German is an advantage

Entry level salary is determined by the pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 4,932.90/month gross, 14 times/year for 40 hours/week. Relevant working experiences may increase the monthly income.
