Tenure-Track Professorship in Interactive Communication
The position
The focus of the tenure track professorship is on interactive communication of humans with technology. We are seeking excellent applicants who study communication with artificial intelligence (AI). Relevant areas may include communication with robots, avatars, social bots, virtual assistants, or AI-driven systems such as chatbots, recommender algorithms, or generative AI. The position focuses on how communicative processes are shaped by and shape these technologies. The tenure track professorship is open to all theoretical and methodological approaches within communication research in the Social Sciences.
Communication science at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Vienna deals with processes in public communication (via the media) and their infrastructural conditions, as well as their impact on society and individuals. With a strong social and communication science orientation, the focus is on the dynamics and development of organizational forms, types, content, effects and consequences of processes of mediatized social communication in the past and present. Interactive communication has not only been an integral part of our research for a long time but is also an important subject area in teaching. Communication science also collaborates across disciplines with faculties at the University of Vienna, including the Faculty of Computer Science, which is closely related to interactive communication.

Your academic profile:
- Doctoral degree/PhD
- Two years of international research experience during or after doctoral studies
- Outstanding research achievements, excellent publication and funding record, international reputation
- Gender and diversity competence
- Experience in designing of and participating in research projects, ability to lead research groups and acquire third-party funding
- Enthusiasm for excellent teaching and supervision at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level
We expect the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor's programmes and for participation in university committees.
