RESEARCH SOFTWARE ENGINEER (F/M/D)
(Part-time / full-time)
You will join an internationally networked team, pursuing research at the intersection between information and communication technology and humanities studies. You will contribute to the development of technical infrastructure of research projects, primarily the long-term research project WBÖ – Dictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austria and the underlying text corpus. Your work will involve planning and implementing an application for curating and managing a large semi-structured XML-encoded dataset of historical linguistic data, to be deployed and published within a complex environment of services offering several lexicographic resources to researchers.
Your Tasks
- user-oriented development of web applications for collaborative authoring, managing and publishing of research data and metadata
- collaboration with the other technical and scholarly team members from the project and the research unit DH Research and Infrastructure
- writing documentation and implementing automated tests for the developed applications
- documenting your work in joint publications with the research team of the dictionary
Your Profile
- background in the field of digital humanities or a related field, e.g. computational lingustics or computer science
- experience in designing and implementing web applications, knowledge of web architectures, standards and protocols
- experience with implementing frontends with Vue.JS (or alternatively React)
- good command of TypeScript, also as a server-side programming language
- good command of modern JavaScript development tools
- team player with independent working style and passion for open source and open data
- optional: knowledge of XML technologies (XPath, XQuery, Schema languages), ideally the TEI Guidelines
- optional: good command of Python, ideally experience with Django framework
- optional: experience in using modern development and deployment tools (Git, Docker, GitHub Actions)

- An annual gross salary of € 51.930,76 according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (fulltime). An overpayment is possible depending on qualifications and experience. The employment will start at the earliest in August 2025 and run initially for 12 months, with the option of conversion to indefinite duration.
