The Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), the largest non-university institution for basic research in Austria, is offering a position as

Postdoc (f/m/x)

(full-time / 40 hours per week) 

for reoccurring short-term assignments taking place during the period from 1 October 2026 to 31 December 2031.

 

The position is a PostDoc position, based in Cairo.

The Austrian Archaeological Institute is Austria's largest research institution in the field of archaeology and ancient studies. The Cairo branch is Austria's only permanent research institution for archaeological field research in Egypt. The tasks of the branch office include archaeological research projects in Egypt and the surrounding countries. The focus is on basic archaeological research, including material culture and cultural-historical studies.

Your Tasks

•      Supervision of excavation areas at Tell el-Dab’a

•      Supervision of excavation areas at Kom Ombo

•      Documentation and recording of archaeological features, contexts and stratigraphic relationships

•      Documentation, recording and initial processing of archaeological finds

•      Coordination of daily excavation and documentation work within the assigned excavation area

Your Profile

•      PH.D. in Egyptology with a specialization in Egyptian archaeology

•      Language skills: German, English and Arabic (Basic)

•      Excellent expertise in the application of field archaeological methods and finds processing 

•      Flexibility, high level of commitment, ability to work in a team, openness to scientific exchange and willingness to spend longer periods of time in the field conducting research 

Our Offer

 

The minimum annual gross salary for this position is EUR 70.167,44  (full-time based), in accordance with the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). For part-time employment, the salary will be adjusted on a pro rata basis in line with the agreed working hours.
