The Acoustics Research Institute (ARI), an interdisciplinary research institution of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research facility, is offering

2 PhD Student Positions (F/M/X)

(part-time / 30h per week)

The positions are associated with the FWF project "Variation of /r/: a challenge for speakers and listeners", in which state-of-the-art experimental techniques on speech production and perception research are combined to understand the impact of free allophonic variation on spoken language dynamics; from the perspective of the speaker (How are the produced variants chosen?) and the listener (How is variation dealt with during speech perception?). The focus will be on the Austrian German phoneme /r/, which is subject to large variation, to explain whether this variation is indeed free or whether and how it interacts with various prosodic constraints during speaking and listening.

As members of the phonetics cluster, the successful candidates will cooperate with the PI Dr. Eva Reinisch, with each other as well as other internal and external collaborators. One position will focus on speech production, the other on perception.

Your tasks:

  • Design and execution of speech production and/or perception experiments.
  • Communication of results in scientific publications and at scientific meetings.

Your profile:

  • Required
    • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in a discipline related to Phonetics or Psycholinguistics.
    • Good knowledge of acoustic phonetics.
    • Experience in experimental work.
    • Good working knowledge and understanding of written and oral English.
    • At least a basic knowledge of German.
  • Beneficial
    • Specific experience with either Ultrasound Tongue Imaging or Eye-tracking.
    • Programming and statistics skills (e.g., in R).
  • Flexibility, ability to learn fast and the ability to work independently as well as in a scientific team.

The positions are limited to 3 years. The starting date is planned for October 01st, 2024. The successful candidates will enroll at the University of Vienna in the PhD program of the Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behavior and Neuroscience. The annual gross salary is € 37.773,33, according to the OeAW’s collective agreement.

Candidates should send a CV, copies of relevant certificates, a statement describing their motivation, personal qualification, and research interests, as well as the names and full contact details of two referees by e-mail to eva.reinisch@oeaw.ac.at, no later than May 26th, 2024.
